Countdown to Chemo: 6 days

Well folks, things have happened since I last posted.

First, I’m once again reminded that we are surrounded by some pretty amazing people who have all helped us reach the right people at the OU Stephenson Cancer Center. I’m sure the administration is tired of hearing about my situation at this point – so thanks, friends! You guys are the best.

For those who know me, I am a problem solver. A process creator. I LOVE identifying issues, creating a plan and implementing it. So, by nature, I just want to fix the problems I’ve experienced. Having been in management for several years, I can see how mistakes like this can happen. Generally, it isn’t because an employee doesn’t care. It isn’t personal. But, that doesn’t make it any less concerning, frustrating or real.

So the good news is that I will be meeting with the director of the center to discuss the problems we have had. I’m really happy that he is taking the time to talk to us. I will do my best to not give my suggestions on how to fix the problems. I’ve got lots of ideas already. Alan might have to muzzle me.

On to chemo…

Yesterday, we had a really good appointment with Dr. Razaq. Not in the form of good news, but in that she talked to us about the problems we had and gave us a game plan for our next steps. By the way, she read my blog. That was a nice awkward moment in the conversation.

Long story short, my OncoDX Type test, which tells my chance of recurrence, came back with results that were intermediate. That stinks, but was not unexpected. Chemo is necessary.

Things are moving really fast now.

Monday morning: I meet with Dr. Razaq to discuss chemo in more detail.

Monday afternoon: I go for a heart scan – a standard test before we start.

Tuesday morning: I get my port placed.

Thursday: I get my first treatment. Gulp.

This weekend, I will spend time nesting in preparation to feel cruddy next weekend. I’m more than happy that we are moving forward, but that doesn’t make me any less terrified of the next step.

Four months…that’s nothing, right? I’ll be done with treatment just in time for me to drink a beer while I watch the first OU football game this fall.

I got this.

  1. Whoa! Well, we wanted action and now we have it.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 This is my continued prayer for you.

  2. That’s our girl! No doubt in my mind — you’ve got this, Jen! And we will be behind you every step of the way. All five of you are surrounded by love. xo

  3. You are a strong woman Jenny! You will make it through the unplesantries of chemo that lie ahead and, in the end, be done for good with it! Makes me think back of my Mom going through both chemo and radiation treatment at the same time. I remember the chemo making her feel sick at times but looking back, she too was strong like you. I can’t even remember her complaining to me (maybe to others)…to me she was always Mom!!
You truly are surrounded with love Jenny and although I don’t post that much, please know I think of you and your journey often.
    Love, Mike

  4. Your positive attitude and strength and realness is inspiring.

I’m ready to cook and get some meals going.

    Here we go!

  5. I’m so glad the process is moving forward again. Since you finally got to talk to the head squeeze (Directotr), provide him your recommendations. You owe that to others who will follow you. So, hang on for a wild ride. We are with you.

  6. Jenny, I sure missed not going to our annual OU game together last season, but look forward to renewing the tradition next fall. So glad this process is about to start and you can look forward to it ending

  7. You’ve definitely got this!! I’m so happy things are moving now and you can kick cancer’s booty that much faster!! Go Jenny!! Xoxo

  8. Glad to hear that there is progress and that you can move forward! I’ll be praying for strength during the next few months. I’m impressed you get to talk to the director. You should absolutely give your ideas! I’d love to be a fly on the wall.
